1. Inspect the Austin Retractor before use and ensure it has been properly cleaned and sterilized.
2. Position the retractor gently against the tissue that needs to be held away from the surgical field.
3. Use the fork-shaped working end to retract the cheek, lip, tongue or mucoperiosteal flap as required.
4. Maintain gentle and controlled pressure to provide adequate visibility without unnecessary tissue trauma.
5. Reposition the retractor when required to maintain appropriate access and visibility.
6. Remove the retractor carefully after completing the surgical procedure.
7. Clean and inspect the instrument after use.
8. Sterilize the reusable retractor according to the applicable validated dental instrument-reprocessing protocol.
