1. Examine the target site and record distal pocket depths on posterior teeth.
2. Select the SGCC13/14 curette and hold it using a modified pen grasp for maximum tactile control.
3. Establish a solid intraoral or extraoral fulcrum on nearby sound tooth structure.
4. Position the lower shank parallel to the distal root surface to ensure correct 70-degree blade angulation.
5. Carefully insert the working blade subgingival with the blade face closed against the root surface.
6. Advance to the base of the pocket, then open the blade face to engage the calculus deposit.
7. Apply controlled, overlapping vertical or oblique working strokes toward the occlusal surface to remove calculus and plan the root.
8. Rinse the pocket and clean the instrument blade before moving to the next distal surface.
