Strontium-Based Glass Ionomer

All GC Gold Label Glass Ionomers are formulated with strontium-containing glass. The incorporation of strontium glass provides excellent radiopacity and a crisp, snap-set reaction, qualities consistently favored by clinicians worldwide. Remarkably, strontium ions mimic calcium during the formation of strontium hydroxyapatite and strontium fluorapatite, thereby promoting internal remineralization within the tooth structure.

Surface Strengthening Effect

Studies have demonstrated that when a strontium-based glass ionomer is exposed to a calcium-rich environment such as saliva, calcium ions diffuse into the surface of the material, resulting in a surface-strengthening effect. Consequently, all GC Gold Label Glass Ionomers continue to gain strength over time in the oral environment.

Consistent and Predictable Seal

Upon mixing, all GC Gold Label Glass Ionomers exhibit a characteristic glossy surface, indicating the presence of free polyacrylic acid essential for initiating the ion exchange process. The dynamic movement of ions between dentin, enamel, and the glass ionomer forms an ion exchange layer that creates a chemical fusion between the tooth and the restorative material. The outcome is a reliable, durable, and long-lasting seal.

Clinical Procedure

• Condition the tooth surface using GC Dentin Conditioner (10% polyacrylic acid).
• Apply the Gold Label 2 or Fuji II Capsule, properly mixed, directly into the cavity.
• Shape and contour the restoration, placing a matrix if necessary during the working time.
• Once the material loses its glossy surface (indicating the initial set), protect against moisture using GC Cocoa Butter, GC Fuji Varnish, or GC Fuji Coat LC.
• Perform final finishing under water spray approximately 15 minutes after the start of mixing.
• After finishing, apply a final protective coating of GC Fuji Varnish or GC Fuji Coat LC.
• For enhanced wear resistance, an optional final coat of G-Coat PLUS may be applied.
