ProTaper Universal Retreatment Files are specifically designed for sequential use to remove root canal filling materials, including gutta-percha, carrier-based obturators, and paste fillers. The system includes three distinct files, each tailored to address different sections of the canal: the coronal third, middle third, and apical third, preparing the canal for subsequent reshaping.

The D1 file features a cutting working tip to facilitate initial penetration into the filling material, making access to the canal easier. The D2 and D3 files have non-cutting tips, used respectively for removing material from the middle and apical thirds of the canal.
