• Begin initial negotiation:
• Fill the pulp chamber with Glyde or sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl).
• Use stainless steel No. 10 and No. 15 hand files to explore the coronal two-thirds of the canal with a gentle back-and-forth motion.
• Work passively until the instruments move freely.
• Start shaping with S1:
• Begin the ProTaper sequence using S1 (purple), allowing it to follow the glide path created by the hand files.
• S1 cuts dentin in a crown-down approach with its larger, more active blades.
• Irrigate, recapitulate with a No. 10K file to loosen debris, and irrigate again.
• Follow proper manual ProTaper technique:
• Rotate the handle clockwise until the file lightly engages dentin.
• Continue clockwise rotation while withdrawing to cut dentin.
• If over-engaged, rotate counterclockwise 45–90 degrees while withdrawing to safely disengage.
• Repeat until the desired depth is reached; multiple passes may be needed depending on anatomy.
• Manage difficult canals:
• Perform one to three S1 recapitulations to adequately pre-enlarge the coronal two-thirds in challenging canals.
• Clean the blades frequently and continue until S1 reaches the depth achieved by the No. 15 hand file.
• Irrigate, recapitulate, and irrigate again.
• Establish patency and working length:
• Use a precurved No. 10K file with NaOCl or Glyde to negotiate the apical portion and confirm patency.
• Determine the working length with a No. 15K file.
• Advance with S1 and S2:
• After confirming a smooth glide path to the terminus, take S1, then S2, to full working length.
• Irrigate, recapitulate, and re-irrigate after each instrument.
• Shape the canal with F1:
• With the canal filled with irrigant, advance F1 (yellow 20/07) to length in one or more passes.
• If it stops progressing, remove, clean the blades, and continue until full length is achieved.
• Irrigate, recapitulate, and irrigate again.
• Gauge the apical foramen:
• Use a No. 20 hand file after F1 reaches length.
• If snug, the canal is ready for obturation.
• If loose, proceed to F2 and, if necessary, F3, gauging after each with No. 25 and No. 30 hand files respectively.
