• Initial canal preparation:
• Fill the pulp chamber with Glyde or Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) for all initial negotiation procedures.
• Explore the coronal two-thirds of the canal with stainless steel Nos. 10 and 15 hand files using a gentle reciprocating motion.
• Work the files passively and progressively until they move freely.
• Start ProTaper sequence with S1 (purple):
• The apical extent of S1 passively follows the portion of the canal prepared with hand files.
• S1 is designed to cut dentin in a crown-down approach with its larger, stronger, and active blades.
• Irrigate, recapitulate with a 10K File to break up debris, then re-irrigate.
• Manual ProTaper handle technique:
• Rotate the handle clockwise until snug, lightly engaging dentin.
• Cut dentin by rotating clockwise while withdrawing the file.
• If over-engaged, rotate counterclockwise 45–90° while withdrawing to prevent further advancement.
• Repeat until the desired length is reached, which may require multiple passes depending on canal anatomy.
• Pre-enlargement of coronal canal:
• In difficult canals, one to three recapitulations with S1 may be needed to pre-enlarge the coronal two-thirds.
• Clean the blades frequently and continue until S1 reaches the depth of the No. 15 hand file.
• Irrigate, recapitulate, and re-irrigate throughout the process.
• Establish patency and working length:
• Use a precurved No. 10K File in NaOCl or Glyde to negotiate the remaining canal and maintain patency.
• Determine working length with a No. 15K File.
• Sequential ProTaper instrumentation:
• After verifying a smooth glide path, advance S1 and then S2 to full working length.
• Irrigate, recapitulate, and re-irrigate after each ProTaper instrument.
• Use of Finisher files:
• Flood the canal with irrigant and work F1 (yellow 20/07) to length in one or more passes.
• If progress halts, remove the file, clear debris, then continue until full length is reached.
• Irrigate, recapitulate, and re-irrigate.
• Foraminal gauging and completion:
• Gauge the foramen with a No. 20 hand file after F1.
• If the No. 20 hand file is snug, the canal is ready for filling.
• If loose, proceed to F2 and, if necessary, F3, gauging after each Finisher with No. 25 and 30 hand files, respectively.
