• Coronal 2/3 Glide Path (Viscous Chelator):
• Passively scout with #10 and #15 hand files.
• Work gently until a smooth, reproducible glide path is confirmed.
• Alternatively, mechanized glide path files may be used after #10 hand file.
• Shaping with S1 (In NaOCl):
• “Float” the S1 in the canal, following the glide path passively.
• Before resistance is encountered, laterally brush and cut dentin on the outstroke to improve straight-line access and apical progression.
• Always brush away from the furcation.
• Continue shaping with S1 until the depth reached by #15 hand file.
• Shaping with S2:
• Follow the same technique as S1.
• Continue until the depth of the #15 hand file is reached.
• Apical 1/3 Glide Path:
• In the presence of a viscous chelator or NaOCl, scout with #10 and #15 hand files.
• Work gently until the files are loose at length.
• Establish working length, confirm patency, and verify a smooth, reproducible glide path.
• Apical Shaping with S1 and S2:
• Use S1 with a brushing action until working length is reached.
• Use S2 with a brushing action until working length is reached.
• Reconfirm working length, irrigate, recapitulate, and re-irrigate, especially in curved canals.
• Finishing Files (F1–F5):
• F1: Use a non-brushing action, inserting progressively deeper with each pass until working length. Do not leave in canal longer than 1 second.
• Gauge the foramen with a #20 hand file.
• If snug: canal is ready for obturation.
• If loose: proceed with F2, and if necessary, F3–F5. Use the same non-brushing motion to working length.
• After each finishing file, gauge with hand files (#25, #30, #40, #50) as appropriate.
• Coronal Shaping with SX:
• Use a brushing motion to move the coronal canal away from furcal concavities or to create more coronal shape.
• SX may also be used to optimally shape shorter roots.
• ProTaper Sequence:
• The sequence is consistent regardless of canal length, diameter, or curvature.
