3M ESPE Ketac Universal Glass Ionomer Restorative is an advanced self-curing restorative material created to simplify everyday clinical procedures while providing durable, high-performance outcomes. Built upon 3M's proven glass ionomer chemistry, this formulation eliminates time-consuming steps such as enamel-dentin conditioning, bonding agent application, and protective glaze sealers. Its non-tacky consistency allows dental practitioners to pack, sculpt, and adapt the material effortlessly without instrument cling.
The material is specifically formulated to yield superior compressive strength and surface hardness, making it well-suited for stress-bearing restorations as well as pediatric, geriatric, and uncooperative patient treatments where speed is essential. It chemically adheres to tooth structure, tolerates residual moisture, and continuously releases fluoride ions to guard against recurrent marginal caries. The standard kit features a 12.5 g powder and 8.5 mL liquid system in Shade A3, providing an optimal balance of esthetic shade matching and mechanical reliability for primary and permanent teeth.

1. Prepare the cavity using conservative operative techniques and clear debris with a gentle water spray.
2. Isolate the treatment field effectively using cotton rolls or a rubber dam, ensuring the surface is moist but not desiccated.
3. Dispense one level scoop of powder onto the mixing pad and place one drop of liquid beside it without bringing them into contact prematurely.
4. Divide the powder into two equal portions and mix the first half into the liquid using a plastic spatula for 10 seconds, then incorporate the remaining powder.
5. Complete the entire hand-mixing procedure thoroughly within 30 to 45 seconds to achieve a uniform, shiny consistency.
6. Apply the mixed restorative material directly into the prepared cavity in bulk without incremental layering.
7. Contour and sculpt the restoration using standard placement instruments during the working period.
8. Allow the self-cure reaction to proceed undisturbed until initial setting occurs, then finish and polish the restoration following standard clinical protocol.
